Coffee of the Month - Papua New Guinea Kainantu

£8.50 GBP

This delicious Papua New Guinea coffee has an exotic and complex flavour with notes of sweet cherry cola, brown sugar, almond and chocolate.

Owner Nichol Colban has lived on the Colbran Coffeelands estate since his family moved to Papua New Guinea in 1963, when he was 6 years old. The estate, which weathered significant political turmoil throughout the second half of the 20th century, has become known for superb quality control.

Ben Colbran, pioneered growing coffee in the Eastern Highlands, especially in Kianantu District.Colbran moved from New Zealand to Papua New Guinea in 1963 with his wife, Norma, and their three children, Jill, Sandra and Nichol. In 1979, Colbran sold the estate and moved with Norma to Australia.

When Ben Colbran moved to Australia, his son, Nichol, worked in farm management for the new owners of the farm. In 1997, bought the farm back and has been the Owner and Director of the farm since then. One of the biggest challenges that the Colbrans faced when they first started out was the issue of soil water-logging. The system widely used for planting coffee seedlings in Papua New Guinea was adapted from Kenya. When planting a new seedling, you dig a hole approximately one meter wide by one meter deep, fill it with top soil and then plant the seedling in it.

This method was completely unsuitable for the wet highlands of PNG, where the average annual rainfall is 90 inches (as opposed to Kenya’s <60 inches). This issue was solved by digging drainage ditches in between each row of coffee. After a short time Ben became very good at ‘reading’ the coffee to see what it needed (i.e. certain fertilisers or whether the coffee was diseased). This knowledge grew over time with experience and these solutions were passed on to Nichol, who still implements them today.

Some minor adjustments have been made over the years as Colbran Coffeelands has grown in size and output. More shade trees have been planted in order to reduce requirements for fertiliser as well as keep weeds under control. Of course, with more shade comes lower yields. Therefore, Colbran Coffeelands has established renovation and planting programs in order to be able to meet future demand.

Nonetheless, according to Nichol, the high quality of coffee from Colbran Coffeelands is, in part, due to ‘old fashioned’ systems that have been in place since the late 60’s.  Meticulous separation for quality control helps maintain the high quality of the estate’s coffee. After careful sorting, cherry is pulped on disk pulpers. Then, it dry-ferments in vats for approximately 36 hours. Water is pumped into the vats in a circular motion to naturally agitate the coffee and remove any remaining mucilage. Coffee is then sundried on tarps, where it is turned regularly to ensure even drying.

Today the farm composes around 220 hectares of mature coffee trees alongside some sections of newer plantings. Colbran Coffeelands also works with farms and farmers in the surrounding region, offering processing and marketing support.  Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a relative newcomer to the specialty coffee scene. The remote locations of the nation’s smallholders—who produce 85% of total coffee in the country—combined with historically-poor infrastructure has made the transition to specialty difficult. Nonetheless, the country is working towards innovative solutions that will hopefully lead to better quality coffee and improved livelihoods for the nation’s smallholder coffee producers.

How will my coffee be packaged?

We use heat sealed bags with a one-way valve (to let gases escape but none in) and this will keep your coffee fresh for up to four months unopened (if you really want to keep it that long!)  We use box-bottomed resealable valve bags as our default but if you want the tall non-resealable valve bags then please ask in the notes for order section.  We then pack your bags of coffee into bespoke cardboard boxes.  These will prevent your coffee from being damaged in transit and are 100% recyclable.

Where does The Bean Shop deliver to?

We currently deliver all over the UK and Europe.  It can get a bit tricky further afield than that as it becomes increasingly difficult to keep track on the parcel's whereabouts. To be honest there is probably a coffee roaster a bit closer if you're outside Europe anyway!

How much does postage cost?

No-one really likes paying for postage but in order to avoid increasing our prices we have opted to charge a flat-rate of £3.00 for all our UK orders.  This is expensive if you only buy one bag of coffee but becomes very reasonable if you order more bags.  We use Royal Mail 1st class for orders up to 3 bags.  For orders 4 bags and over we use DPD 48 hour delivery as a default (this option will require a signature upon delivery.)

In geographically isolated areas of the UK, DPD can take longer than 48 hours so we have added the option of paying for Royal Mail which could be more efficient.

How long will it take?

We aim to deliver your order within 48 hours of receiving it (under normal circumstances) and are often much quicker!  During peak periods (i.e. Christmas) your order may take a little longer due to delays or extreme weather conditions.

If I'm not in?

For orders of 1 bag of coffee our boxes are post-box friendly so should be delivered whether or not you're in.  For larger parcels, usually the delivery person will leave a card saying it has been returned to the post depot where you can collect it from.  Many customers find it easier to have their coffee delivered to their place of work so that there is always someone there to accept it.
