Brazil Fazenda Dutra 100% Organic

£8.00 GBP

Flavours of caramel, toasted almond and milk chocolate with a smooth body and delicate acidity make this an exceptional coffee from Brazil's Matas de Minas region.

Fazenda Dutra is a family-run coffee farm located 300 kilometers inland from the east cost of Brazil and has been focusing on sustainable and high-quality coffee since 1950. Founded by José Dutra Sobrinho, the farm is currently run by second generation brothers Ednilson Alves Dutra and Walter Cesar Dutra, alongside Osvaldina Dutra, their mother, who plays a key role in overseeing the quality control which led to them winning a Cup of Excellence award in 2020.

The farms are dedicated to coffee cultivation almost entirely with some cover crops and nature reserves. These lands are used in conjunction to farm biodynamically, a process which includes composting organic waste to produce nutrient-rich fertiliser for the coffee trees, and planting legumes and other cover crops between coffee rows to improve soil fertility, suppress weeds and attract beneficial insects.

In the 1950s, Jose Dutra Sobrinho inherited a 1-hectare coffee farm that he worked and developed for more than 40 years. He embraced the 1986 price crisis as a moment to “work even harder” and intensify his passion for coffee, and he continued to purchase land and expand the farm.

In September 1999, Jose passed away and left the farm to his sons Walter Cesar Dutra and Ednilson Alves Dutra, who take their responsibility to their family and their father’s legacy very seriously. They have invested in their coffee education, including attending Illy’s Coffee University, and equipped with new knowledge they have participated in competitions, won more than 80 prizes and continue to improve the quality of their coffee.

Fazenda Dutra is today more than 1,300 hectares, with 800 hectares dedicated to specialty coffee. The coffee trees are interwoven with avocado trees, and the remaining acreage is both preserved native forest and cultivated eucalyptus, which is used during the harvest period and in drying machines.

The farm has 50 full-time employees, employs an additional 250 workers in the off season and provides 600 jobs during the harvest period. The full-time team includes Leonardo Rodrigues, a Q Grader in charge of the farm’s Quality program.

This coffee is certified Organic, natural processed and primarily dried on raised beds.

How will my coffee be packaged?

We use heat sealed bags with a one-way valve (to let gases escape but none in) and this will keep your coffee fresh for up to four months unopened (if you really want to keep it that long!)  We use box-bottomed resealable valve bags as our default but if you want the tall non-resealable valve bags then please ask in the notes for order section.  We then pack your bags of coffee into bespoke cardboard boxes.  These will prevent your coffee from being damaged in transit and are 100% recyclable.

Where does The Bean Shop deliver to?

We currently deliver all over the UK and Europe.  It can get a bit tricky further afield than that as it becomes increasingly difficult to keep track on the parcel's whereabouts. To be honest there is probably a coffee roaster a bit closer if you're outside Europe anyway!

How much does postage cost?

No-one really likes paying for postage but in order to avoid increasing our prices we have opted to charge a flat-rate of £3.00 for all our UK orders.  This is expensive if you only buy one bag of coffee but becomes very reasonable if you order more bags.  We use Royal Mail 1st class for orders up to 3 bags.  For orders 4 bags and over we use DPD 48 hour delivery as a default (this option will require a signature upon delivery.)

In geographically isolated areas of the UK, DPD can take longer than 48 hours so we have added the option of paying for Royal Mail which could be more efficient.

How long will it take?

We aim to deliver your order within 48 hours of receiving it (under normal circumstances) and are often much quicker!  During peak periods (i.e. Christmas) your order may take a little longer due to delays or extreme weather conditions.

If I'm not in?

For orders of 1 bag of coffee our boxes are post-box friendly so should be delivered whether or not you're in.  For larger parcels, usually the delivery person will leave a card saying it has been returned to the post depot where you can collect it from.  Many customers find it easier to have their coffee delivered to their place of work so that there is always someone there to accept it.
